  • Mobile phone/GPS jammers and certain prohibited radio equipment
  • Small high-powered magnets such as “buckyballs”

What Can and Can’t You Send to New Zealand?

1 answer

Popular items that are often shipped to New Zealand include golf clubs, bicycles, guitars, toolboxes, surfboards, and monitors.

New Zealand has some of the world’s strictest biosecurity and customs regulations, so it’s important to know what’s allowed before shipping your belongings. Most personal items, including furniture, clothing, books, and electronics, can be brought into the country without issue. Shipping tools to New Zealand is also allowed and common, especially for tradespeople; however, you should ensure all tools are thoroughly cleaned and free from any soil, grease, or plant material to avoid inspection delays on the New Zealand side.

Failing to declare restricted or contaminated items can result in fines, delays, or even the destruction of your goods. Always consult the latest information from New Zealand Customs and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), or ask your shipping provider for guidance before packing.

Artwork and Antiques

If you have antiques valued at NZD$1000 or above, you will need an import declaration. You can import antiques over 100 years old free of duty when sending boxes to New Zealand if you can provide a Certificate of Antiquity, and they are not for re-sale.

For a full list of restricted or prohibited items, please see the official New Zealand Customs website.

Customs Guide for Sending Personal Effects to New Zealand

1 answer

All goods that arrive in New Zealand are subject to customs and biosecurity clearance. We will submit all the necessary paperwork required to obtain the release of your goods, which can sometimes take up to 7 days. Clearance may take longer during busy periods, but you do not need to be present or in the country for the process to be completed.

How Does Delivery to My Address in New Zealand Work?

1 answer

Once your goods have been released by Kiwi customs we will contact you to arrange a suitable delivery day.

Once we’ve received clearance of your goods we will either deliver your sea freight container directly to your new home or it will be delivered in a separate vehicle. This all depends on the type of shipment you are sending. Our unloading crew will place your items in the rooms of your choice and unwrap and remove the packing material from any furniture.

Do I Need Insurance or Shipment Protection Cover?

1 answer

When you book with PSS, your shipment is covered under the BAR Advanced Payment Guarantee Scheme.

However, it is highly advisable to take out shipment protection cover before sending items to New Zealand. Although problems are unlikely, it is still wise to have cover when sending goods overseas, especially for items of significant financial value.

PSS International offers very flexible Shipment Protection Plans. You can cover your whole shipment or choose the individual items you wish to cover. Your PSS Move Manager can explain the different options available and guide you through completing the Shipment Protection Valuation form.
